Ten Questions for the Reader Who Is Done Pretending She Isn't Curious

Ten gentle yes, no or not-yet questions that sort your curiosity into one of three sensual portraits.

Ten Questions for the Reader Who Is Done Pretending She Isn't Curious

You clicked, so we can skip the coy part. Curiosity is not a flaw we outgrow. It is the one appetite that sharpens with experience, because by now you know precisely what you do not know. These ten questions are not tricks. They are doors left slightly ajar. Answer yes, no or not yet, and keep count of your yeses. Nobody is grading, and I promise not to be shocked. I have heard stranger confessions than yours before the coffee cooled.

One: have you ever reread a message just for its tone? Two: is there a restaurant you walk past slowly because of who you once sat with? Three: would you accept an invitation you cannot fully picture? Four: do you own something beautiful that nobody has seen you wear? Pause here. Notice which of these made you smile before you could stop yourself. That smile is data, and I am a great believer in data that arrives wearing lipstick.

Five: could you spend an entire evening on one conversation and call it a triumph? Six: do you ever wish someone would ask what you really want, then actually wait for the answer? Seven: have you imagined a different version of next year, one with a train ticket in it? Notice, too, how many of these you answered before you finished reading them. Quick answers are usually the true ones. Slow answers are usually true as well, just wrapped in paper.

One: have you ever reread a message just for its tone? Two: is there a restaurant you walk past slowly because of who you once sat with? Three: would you accept an invitation you cannot fully picture? Four: do you own something beautiful that nobody has seen you wear? Pause here.

Eight: would you rather be surprised than be right? Nine: is there something you have wanted to say aloud, to a safe listener, in low light? Ten: if tonight offered one unplanned hour, would you say yes to it? Now count. You do not need a calculator, only honesty and a pen that works. Zero to three yeses, four to seven, eight to ten: those are your three groups, and each has a portrait waiting.

Zero to three: you are The Candlelit Confessor, curious in private and rehearsing the sentence for ages. You are not shy, you are selective, and what you finally say will land like a stone in still water. Four to seven: you are The Velvet Adventurer, who says yes to the right surprises and has the wardrobe, the nerve and the humor to make them work. Eight to ten: you are The Second-Act Showstopper, who has decided the best chapters are still ahead and has begun, with a flourish, to prove it.

If your result made you want to say that sentence aloud, you do not have to rehearse it in the bathroom mirror. On TheFriend you can talk it through with a character who will not flinch, interrupt, or tell your sister. They are AI characters, which makes them wonderful for trying out a bold new beginning before you try it on a person. I will be there, and I will pour us something metaphorical.

Got your number? Bring it to TheFriend and let Dilek help you decide what to do with all that curiosity.
